Every private school in Abu Dhabi is inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) under the Irtiqaa framework, which grades a school on a six-band scale — Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak and Very Weak — against six performance standards. The headline band is what most parents see. But every inspection also produces a detailed report: the school's key strengths, ADEK's recommendations, and a rating for each of the six standards.
We read the most recent published Irtiqaa report for 195 schools — every rated school for which ADEK has published one — and pulled the ratings, the per-standard judgements and the recommendations into structured data. This is what that reading shows about the emirate's schools as of August 2026.
The rating landscape
Of the 212 schools that currently carry an Irtiqaa rating, roughly three in four are rated Good or better. Outstanding is genuinely rare, and only a handful sit in the Weak band.

Where schools are strongest — and where they struggle
Averaging each school's rating across the six performance standards reveals a consistent shape to Abu Dhabi's provision. Schools are strongest, by a clear margin, on protection, care and safeguarding: more than half are rated Very Good or better on that standard. The picture is tighter, and more variable, on the standards that bear directly on learning — curriculum, teaching and students' achievement.

The practical takeaway for parents: safeguarding is strong almost everywhere, so it rarely separates one school from another. The standards that do separate schools — how well they teach, what they teach, and how much pupils achieve — are exactly the ones worth reading closely on any shortlist.
What ADEK most often asks schools to improve
Across the reports we read, ADEK issued nearly 800 individual recommendations. Grouping them by theme shows a strikingly consistent improvement agenda: the same handful of priorities recur across schools of every curriculum and rating band.
- Assessment and use of data (about 37% of recommendations) — making internal assessment more reliable, and using the resulting data to plan lessons and close gaps.
- Raising attainment and progress (about 34%) — lifting outcomes to a consistently higher band across subjects and phases.
- Teaching quality (about 24%) — more consistent, better-differentiated teaching that stretches higher-attaining pupils.
- Leadership and self-evaluation (about 23%) — sharper, evidence-based self-evaluation and stronger middle leadership.
- Curriculum (about 15%) — adapting the curriculum and embedding cross-curricular and innovation skills.
A recommendation is not a black mark: every Abu Dhabi school — including Outstanding ones — receives them at each inspection. They are the school's improvement priorities, and reading them tells you what its leaders are working on now.
Ratings move — read the current report
A rating is a snapshot of a single inspection, and inspections happen on a cycle. When we compared each school's latest published report against its previously listed rating, 26 schools had moved up a band and 10 had moved down at their most recent inspection. A headline rating you saw a year or two ago may no longer be current.
That is why every school profile on this site now surfaces the school's most recent inspection date, its strengths and recommendations, and its rating in each of the six standards — drawn straight from the published ADEK report, not from an older summary field.
How to read your school's rating
- Look past the headline band. Two schools rated Good can look very different once you see their six standard ratings side by side.
- Weight the learning standards. Because safeguarding is strong across the board, teaching, curriculum and achievement are where meaningful differences show up.
- Read the recommendations. They tell you what the school itself is being asked to fix — useful questions to raise on a tour.
- Check the inspection date. Prefer the most recent report; an older rating may have since changed.

All figures above come from ADEK's published Irtiqaa inspection reports and Abu Dhabi open data, read and structured by AbuDhabiSchools.com in August 2026. Ratings and percentages reflect the schools with a published report at that time and will shift as ADEK inspects more schools and publishes new reports. Per-standard figures take each school's overall judgement for a standard across its inspected phases. No figure on this page is estimated or modelled — each traces to a primary ADEK source.
